About the Role
We are looking for a Middleware / Platform Engineer to support, deploy, and maintain the open-source middleware and application platforms. This is a broad platform engineering role spanning web/application servers, messaging, caching, and container platforms. We’re particularly looking to strengthen our capabilities around Apache Kafka and Redis, so strong hands-on experience with these two is a key requirement — but the role itself covers the full middleware stack.
Key Responsibilities
- Deploy, configure, and maintain a range of open-source middleware and application platforms (e.g., Nginx, Apache HTTP Server, Tomcat, Open Liberty), ensuring reliability and performance.
- Administer Apache Kafka clusters, including topic/partition design, broker tuning, and consumer group management.
- Manage Redis deployments across standalone, Sentinel, and Cluster modes.
- Apply core middleware principles — load balancing, caching, pub/sub and event-streaming patterns, connection pooling, and high availability — across the platforms you support.
- Build and maintain highly available, fault-tolerant clusters, including backup, replication, and disaster recovery practices.
- Support middleware workloads running on containerized platforms such as Kubernetes, OpenShift, or Docker.
- Implement and maintain monitoring/observability tooling (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana) to track platform health and performance.
- Troubleshoot platform issues, support capacity planning, and collaborate with application, DevOps, and SRE teams.
- Contribute to documentation, runbooks, and operational standards across the middleware estate.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in platform/infrastructure engineering across middleware and open-source application platforms.
- Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka (cluster setup, topic/partition design, broker tuning, consumer group behavior).
- Hands-on experience with Redis (standalone, Sentinel, and Cluster modes).
- Good understanding of core middleware concepts: load balancing, caching, pub/sub and event-streaming patterns, connection pooling, and high availability.
- Experience deploying and tuning highly available, fault-tolerant clusters, including backup, replication, and disaster recovery practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Exposure to other open-source middleware/application servers (e.g., Nginx, Open Liberty, Apache HTTP Server, Tomcat), with a willingness to pick up new platforms as needed.
- Exposure to Kubernetes/OpenShift or Docker-based deployments.
- Familiarity with monitoring/observability tooling such as Prometheus and Grafana.
What We’re Looking For
A well-rounded platform engineer who’s comfortable across the middleware stack, but who can also step in and own our Kafka and Redis environments – from setup and tuning to day-to-day operations – as we build out that expertise on the team.
